Completed in 2007, the Oslo Opera House reflects the landscape of Norway and also the aesthetics of its people. The government wanted the new Opera House to become a cultural landmark for Norway and a monumental symbol for modern Norway.
The gala opening on 12th April 2008 was attended by His Majesty King Harald, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, President Tarja Halonen of Finland and other international leaders.
During the opening concert, the audience was treated to a very special version of the Slave Chorus from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Nabucco, which was performed by a 450-strong choir comprising not only the professional musicians but also representatives of Norway’s municipalities and of all those who helped to build the Opera House.
